Outfield assist
2 for 4 last week in the competitive league. Hit the ball well every time, but got a bit unlucky. 6 for 8 tonight in the 40 & over league. Started out the night with a "mini-cycle" -- single, double, triple in order. But I lined out to first with my homerun swing. Threw out a guy trying to score from second on a single for my first outfield assist of the year. We swept our arch-rivals (both teams are charter members of the league) 20-5 and 19-15. | | Wednesday, June 1st, 2005 | | 1:15 pm |
57 runs in 5 innings
The interval between entries is indicative of reporting bias. Had a mild slump due to fatigue and managing. Only 22 of my last 36. Yesterday, in the "less" competitive league (not as much money awarded), my team scored 57 runs in 5 innings, including 25 in our last at-bat, and despite making some semi-intentional outs to get things over more quickly. Some of the guys were saying it was the worst team they'd ever played against, but actually I've seen worse in the leagues in this town. However, this was the worst mismatch I've ever seen. We won the first game 25-1 in 3.5 innings (by the 20 run rule). In the second game, we were the visitors, and after the first inning we were only up 7-4. But then we had our big inning, and we let the other team bat three innings in a row to complete the game. Final score: 32-4. | | Thursday, May 19th, 2005 | | 1:06 pm |
My softball dream team
In case anyone out there shares this goal and can contribute some players: I've always wanted to play on a primarily singles-hitting squad where I was an average hitter (or below!). Over the years, I've averaged about .650, but when I've had the luxury of someone else making the lineup and handling substitutions, I've batted about .750. If you could assemble a team that batted .750, that team would average more than 7 runs per inning, even if everyone just hit singles. It would be an odds on favorite to win just about any national championship tournament from Class B on down. I've only had one opportunity to play with a team that came close to this dream. Nine years ago, I batted around .720 and I was the median hitter on a squad of about 14 players. In a 12 game fall (autumn) schedule of the top league in a medium-sized metropolitan area, we won two games by the 30 run rule, which applied at any point in the game -- both of these games went 3 innings. In one inning of one of those games, we had scored nine runs when the right fielder dropped a short fly ball that would have been the third out. ... We scored 13 more runs that inning. But the team's manager couldn't hold the squad together the next season, and before he could regroup, I had moved to another state. My other "near dream experience" was one night last season when my team scored 61 runs in 7 innings, winning 34-14 and 27-7 (by the 20 run rule, which applied in the 4th inning) in one of the top leagues in a major metropolitan area. We went 73 for 92 (.793) -- I actually dragged the team down that night, going only 4 for 8! | | 12:37 pm |

Sucked again -- 3 for 5 (one double). My excuse: the distraction of having to manage the team (my regular game-time manager was out of town; I prefer to limit my organizational role to general manager), which typically costs me about 100 points. Fortunately, since this is the "competitive" league ($25 to winning team for each game!), we won both games anyway (10-9 in extra innings and 19-3 in 5 innings). Batting (or more precisely, "on basing") .773 (17/22) for the year so far, which is actually quite good -- my (ambitious) season goal is .750. But I've been lucky with a few poorly hit balls -- such as a popup double last night. Plus, my new aspheric contact lenses are terrific -- not just a better prescription but everything seems much crisper than the past few seasons during night games -- so I anticipate rolling back a few years off the calendar this season, both hitting and fielding. |
